General Information
Tegucigalpa, the Capital of Honduras, grew as a colonial city around a series of silver mines. Founded as Real Minas de San Miguel in 1540, its present name, Tegucigalpa means "silver hills" in the original native's language. "Teguz" is an excellent base for visiting a series of small towns that retain much of their colonial flavor. In them, you will have a chance to mingle with the local people, and buy some of the traditional Honduran handicrafts at their markets.
