This
twelve hour excursion is perhaps the most rewarding
of all in Honduras. It will take you deep into the heart
of the country and will give you a glimpse of the varied
landscapes and the opportunity to view one of the most
significant Maya sites in Central America.
The ancient Maya City of Copán enthralled travelers
ever since adventure travelers Stephens and Catherwood
“discovered” it during the mid nineteenth
century. Copán has been the focus of the most
continuous sustained investigation in all the Maya World.
The results are easy to see. More mystery of the ancient
Maya culture has been unraveled here than anywhere else.
Departing Puerto Cortes in your air-conditioned coach,
the first 45 minutes is the main road to San Pedro Sula.
This heavily traveled industrial area has many manufacturing
plants and factories and is virtual forest of billboards
and signposts. As the countryside opens up beyond San
Pedro Sula, you will begin to see the more typical lowland
scenery until you reach La Entrada. This town marks
the change from the lowlands to the highlands. As you
climb into the highlands, the landscape changes and
becomes more breathtaking. The winds its way to the
hills, passing tobacco plantations, rustic villages
until you reach the plateau where Copán is located. |
